Children from Buzet learned about water conservation in karst area: (26 – 27 May 2015)
In late May the Science and education center Speleo House in Vodice (Municipality of Lanišće) brought together the children from the Grdelin kindergarten and the pupils of the elementary school Vazmoslav Gržalja and their educators and teachers in educational workshops on water conservation in karst areas.
The workshops were organized by the Department of Sustainable Development of the Istria County within the European project “Život – Voda (Živo!)” (Life – Water), and conducted by the experts of the Bioteka organization. Four workshops were held for about 50 participants designed on the principle of experiential learning, in order to learn more of karst features and phenomena, and to raise awareness of the importance of karst for the quality of drinking water.
On Tuesday, 26 May 2015, the workshops were attended by preschool children and the third and fourth graders of the district schools Livada, Roč and Lanišće, who were using demonstration trials and exercises on the model of karst aquifers to learn about the development of karst landforms, the impact of acid rain on the environment, how contaminants get into groundwater water and threaten to affect drinking water quality, and thus a variety of plant and animal species and the man. The next day, their educators and teachers participated in the same workshops in order to qualify for independent implementation of similar events in the future. On both days the participants of these workshops were taken on an educational nature walk under the expert guidance of the employees of the public institution ‘Natura Histrica’.
